Tantalite
The principal ore of tantalum
Overview
Tantalite is the primary commercial source of tantalum, a dense, highly corrosion-resistant metal with properties that make it difficult to substitute. It occurs alongside columbite in Nigeria’s granite formations, the two together commonly known as coltan.
Applications
Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors store more charge per unit volume than almost any alternative, which is why they appear in nearly every mobile phone, laptop and medical device manufactured today.
Medical implants
Tantalum is biocompatible and does not react with body fluids, which places it in surgical implants, bone repair plates and stents.
Aerospace superalloys
Tantalum raises the temperature tolerance of nickel superalloys used in turbine blades.
Chemical processing
Its corrosion resistance makes tantalum valuable for equipment handling aggressive acids.
Why origin matters here more than anywhere
Tantalum carries a difficult global reputation. Years of association with conflict financing in central Africa have placed downstream buyers under real regulatory and reputational pressure to prove where their material originated. Many are now unable to buy what they cannot trace.
Nigerian tantalite, extracted under licence with a documented chain of custody, answers that question directly.
Every consignment we sell is logged against its source at extraction, tracked through processing, and sold with its chain of custody intact.
