Tin
Cassiterite, from Nigeria's historic tin belt
Overview
Tin is extracted as cassiterite, a tin oxide mineral and by far the most important commercial source of the metal. Nigeria's tin belt has supplied global markets for over a century, and Kaduna sits within that belt.
Applications
Electronics
Tin forms the solder joints in virtually every circuit board manufactured. Following the shift away from lead-based solder, tin demand from electronics has grown substantially.
Packaging
Tin plating protects steel from corrosion, which is what makes food-grade tinplate possible.
Alloys
Bronze, pewter and bearing metals all depend on tin. It has been alloyed with copper for over five thousand years.
Chemicals
Tin compounds are used in glass coatings, catalysts and stabilisers for plastics.
